Campus Navigation for Blind People on Android Devices

Published on Sep 03, 2023

Abstract

The objective of this project is to guide blind people with voice navigated GPS using an Android Phone. This project has been proposed to PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY campus to reach the campus. This app is an innovative and cost effective guide system for blind people. For blind and visually impaired people is quite impossible to be autonomous in the contemporary world, in which we are completely surrounded by information, but only visual information.

When looking for a product in shops, or ordering at the restaurant, or when they want to listen to the music on a CD, blind persons encounter the visual barrier of the written language, which only the help of another person can solve. In this paper the authors describe a new system based on Android technology and designed for trying to solve this situation of impossibility of information that afflicts blind people.

EXISTING SYSTEM:

Finding an ROUTE or branch near to us is possible through GIS. A geographic information system is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographically referenced data. The locator to find the services you require - simply enter your postcode, town or city and click on 'Search' to see all ROUTEs in your area. GIS is the merging of cartography, statistical analysis, and database technology. In a general sense, the term describes any information system that integrates, stores, edits, analyzes, shares, and displays geographic information for informing decision making. GIS a more complex mapping technology that is connected to a particular database. Because it’s generic, it is a broader term than the GPS in its technical sense. Thus, GIS is a computer program or application that is utilized to view and handle data about geographic locations and spatial correlations among others. It simply gives the user a framework to obtain information.

DISADVANTAGES OF EXISTING SYSTEM:

Merging of cartography, statistical analysis, and database technology.

 Complex mapping technology

 No wrong root indication

 No nearest indication

PROPOSED SYSTEM:

Identifies location & navigates you to the nearest Place or ROUTE. Get turnby- turn directions to the nearest Place or ROUTE. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near the Earth, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver. The GPS (Global Position System) is a network that locates certain places here on earth whereas the GIS (Geographic Information System) is a computer program that process data linked to certain places or locations.

ADVANTAGES OF PROPOSED SYSTEM:

· Space-based satellite navigation system.

· Provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near the Earth.

· If we enter into wrong root then automatic wrong root indication will give by voice. If we are at near then automatic nearest place indication will give by voice.

MODULES:

· Connecting to GPS

· Reset Module

· Route Tracker Map

· Voice guided system

MODULES DESCRIPTION:

1. Connecting to GPS

In general, bluetooth is used to connect GPS receivers to Windows devices. Compact Flash and SD GPS receivers insert into standard slots on windows devices and built in GPS receivers require no connection. USB GPS receivers usually come with a USB cable permanently attached and connect to standard USB ports on window devices. In some cases, you will need one or more of the following items to connect your external GPS receiver to the mobile device being used to run ArcPad: Determine what cables, adapters, and gender changers, if any, are needed to connect your GPS receiver to the mobile device being used to run ArcPad. Connect the GPS receiver to the mobile device. Configure the GPS receiver. Set the GPS Preferences in ArcPad.

2. Reset Module

Maps and GPS receivers show latitude and longitude angles. Maps usually show bold lines marked in degrees (whole numbers) plus possibly intermediate lines marked 15, 30, 45 minutes or 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 minutes. GPS receivers typically show degrees plus minutes and decimal fractions of a minute. e.g. 45 : 23.1234 You can normally alter the display options on a GPS using the setup menu. Latitude is used to express how far north or south you are, relative to the equator. If you are on the equator your latitude is zero. If you are near the north pole your latitude is nearly 90 degrees north. If you are near the south pole your latitude is almost 90 degrees south Longitude shows your location in an east-west direction, relative to the Greenwich meridian. Places to the east of Greenwich have longitude angles up to 180 degrees east.

3. Route Tracker Map

Track a GPS enabled cell phone on Google maps. Project includes cell phone source and source code to display data on your own website. Currently, the GPS will only be useful to you to carry along to find out the latitude and longitude, and altitude. The Web-based interactive digital maps use this technology, which also powers the 'Windows Live Local mapping service,' so users do not need to download and install any software to use the maps.

4. Voice guided system

In this module, we implement voice guided system. For blind and visually impaired people is quite impossible to be autonomous in the contemporary world, in which we are completely surrounded by information, but only visual information.
